Leaving the country I call my home to pursue my dreams might have been the most difficult thing I've ever done in my life. Every now and then I get ever so slightly insecure about that decision but then I look at all the great people who have done just as great or an even greater leap from one country to another and I'm instantly reminded that the immense growth it spurs within your personality is what makes you you. Just look at this lady! Susana from Style & Life by Susana was born in Portugal but has spent most of her life in Geelong, Australia. She's one of those fabulous women who have this incredible gracious flare to them (you know those that walk and their skirts flutter in the wind despite everything else being absolutely motionless). Susana will tell you all about Geelong and why it's the place to explore (and perhaps spend a gap year in!).
WHY YOU SHOULD MOVE TO GEELONG?
🇦🇺 We’re surrounded by beaches
Some of the world’s best beaches are located on the Bellarine and Surf Coast and Geelong’s waterfront (also known as Eastern Beach) is an absolute stunner too! Surfers can go catch the waves at 13th Beach or head down to Raffs Beach in Barwon Heads, and beginners get the lowdown on hanging 10 at Ocean Grove with Go Ride A Wave or Sea Earth Adventures. Ocean Grove is also one of the best spots for good old-fashioned family beach fun. This inspiring outdoor lifestyle is the perfect invigorator to get you moving and shaking your way from this region to the world.
🇦🇺 We’re close to the major city (Melbourne)
Whether it’s for business or pleasure, Melbourne is only 45 minutes away by car and Avalon Airport is a twenty-minute drive from Geelong with regular daily flights to major locations around Australia.
🇦🇺 We’re not stuck in traffic
I can tell you that traffic in Geelong is nothing like what you would experience in Melbourne. It takes me only eight minutes from my home in Norlane West (suburb of Geelong) to get into the town centre Geelong. Lifestyle locations close to the beach or in rural areas are half an hour from the town centre, giving you gorgeous sea change and/or tree change choices as you’re driving by.
🇦🇺 We’re spoilt for good dining
Geelong is blessed to some of Australia's best regional dining. One place you have to try is Little Creatures’ (see more here). It’s such a cool, laid back place that’s great for everyone. It has an onsite brewery, bar, canteen and beer garden and the food is out of this world!
🇦🇺 We’re surrounded by markets & vintage warehouses
Geelong is well known for and homes numerous vintage and collectable warehouses. Three of my favourites are How Bazaar, Geelong Vintage Market and The Amazing Mill Market. You can spend days cruising up and down the aisles looking at someone else's brilliant and cool ‘junk’.
🇦🇺 We have one of the most haunted buildings in Australia!
Geelong Gaol is apparently one of the most haunted buildings in Australia. It opened in 1853 and is still one of Australia’s most intact 19th century buildings. The Geelong Gaol played host to extreme convicts in even worse conditions. Boo!
🇦🇺 We’re surrounded by amazing wine!
If you like wine (I would be shocked if you didn’t), then it is a must to go on the Bellarine Winery Tour. These tours are a must and provide you with great tasting wines, quirky and picturesque wineries, amazing scenery and information about the regions. We are so blessed in Geelong that we have over twenty wineries to choose from. Cheers mate!
🇦🇺 We have a gorgeous oasis botanical garden!
It dates back to 1851 and has transformed over the years as being a true unique and one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in Victoria (see it here). Located in the grounds of Eastern Park, both the park and gardens are only a short walk or drive from the towns centre in Geelong.
