What to do to give your home that fresh kick after all the rain & snow?
🌱 Spring cleanThere's something incredibly satisfying about a good house clean - when all is done and you sit in your favourite chair (with zero foundation finger prints on it), a brand new candle burning by your side and the cat litter box smelling like lavender. It's the journey of getting there that scares us though, isn't it? I've been seeing a lot of cleaning 'challenges' on blogs, a lot of tips and tricks but it all seems a little overwhelming. Where to start, that is the question. My way of doing things is either all or nothing - that's why I love Cecilia's from Home with Keki '40 Trash Bag Challenge to Declutter' (get your check list here). She goes right at it - with 40 days on hand and 40 bin liners ready to be stuffed with all the crap no one has time for. Pretty genius if you ask me. I've already filled up about 10 bags. That's right. TEN BAGS. Plus two that are full of things I need to list on eBay.
🌱 New home scent
You might have seen my favourite recipe for a DIY room scent - still my absolute favourite, although I do like mixing things up so instead of those really woody peppery essential oils I've been adding more zesty ones instead. I have also discovered the first room spray that doesn't give me a headache - it's by a company called Floris London (read more about them here). It's one of those proper old school companies with the longest history dating back to 1730! These are my favourite, especially when it comes to candles and everything interior related. I have the Peony & Rose one which smells like heaven - beautifully rose-y with a hint of freshly cut peonies. And the bottle looks so damn fancy it will have a special place reserved on your bedroom night stand the same way it's nestled on mine.
🌱 Fresh bouquets & new plants
A fresh bouquet of sunshine daffodils is always a good idea. They are just a quid in Asda! Alternatively you can go for something a little more long-lasting & more fun - have you tried growing your own houseplants from scratch before? You could have an actual avocado forest from all the avocados you've eaten this year - here's a quick & easy guide on how to grow your own avocado from a seed. Or maybe just grab a new plant from IKEA like I have. I even made it a little macrame hanger - can't wait for it to start spilling over the edges of the pot!
🌱 Add a pop of colour
I've already mentioned 5 easy ways to add colour to your home but there's still so much more you can do. Adding a rug is one option (and one that's worked beautifully in our living room) or you can always get some gorgeous spring prints to switch up your gallery wall. They don't even have to be super fancy prints from Etsy or Society6, you can always paint something yourself, print out a picture you like the look of (I used to have a wall full of Frida Kahlo, now it's Ruben Ireland) or just make a collage out of your favourite magazine snaps or photographs from your holiday. Four years ago I made a DIY wall of happy memories with lots of my favourite photos and to this day it's still one of my favourite home decor DIYs I've ever created.
🌱 Do it yourself
You could always spend your money on a gorgeous new sofa to brighten up the moody living room, a new set of palm leaf bedding that will make you sleep like a baby or a set of shiny copper cutlery. That would most definitely refresh your home, no question about that. I say don't. This year I'm trying to be a bit more frugal, more money savvy. Instead of throwing your bank cards around just set a few hours of this weekend aside and give a DIY project of your choice a go. You can make these stunning 19th century curio domes, cheerful cushions with rainbow tassels or a £1 cactus terrarium (which you could very easily turn into a hanging globe!).
