Czechs are (surprisingly) quite a traditional nation considering we're one of the top atheist countries in the world. So it happens that quite often my 'totally normal' traditions are met with surprised (sometimes even slightly horrified) expressions of my friends and beloved here in the UK. Now Halloween is a perfect example of this. Czech people don't traditionally celebrate Halloween (although I've got nothing against dressing up as a cat for one night a year, trust me). What we do celebrate (although celebrate might be a rather strong word here) is All Souls' Day.

All Souls' Day is held on the 2nd November. Every year on this day we make special effort to remember those who passed away. We go to graveyards and cemeteries and leave flowers, light candles. There's no special merchandise in shops for All Souls' Day (unlike Halloween) - although it's true that florists start selling special wreaths and ribbons with commemorative quotes and get an extra stock of outdoor candles. It's not generally a sad day - as dark as it may sound - it's usually just a bit more peaceful, almost sombre for most people.

To brighten up the mood of this post - here are a few snaps of my new dress from Ghost. It's my very first midi dress and let me just tell you how perfect it is for days like this - moody, gloomy autumn with on and off rain and cold wind. Oh, and have I mentioned it's got pockets?!

Just out of curiosity - have you ever heard of All Souls' Day?
Do you celebrate it?
